In the playoffs, anything can happen. At least that's what the CVCA Royals are hoping as they come into Sunday as 34-point underdogs against the Perry Pirates. It's do or die for each team as always in the postseason. Regardless of the outcome, each team can take comfort in the fact that they had a successful enough season to get here, but only one team will be satisfied with the result as the other's season will end on a loss. The Royals, one of the top teams in Division 4, come into the game ranked 44th. The Pirates come in ranked 2nd. Having matched up in 2018, there is a degree of familiarity between the two. Last season, the Pirates beat the Royals 48-34.
CVCA is 8-3 after their 40-8 win against the Salem Quakers last week. This week, they look to build on that victory on the way to what they hope will be a strong finish to the season. The Royals have struggled on offense, scoring only 23.5 points per game over their last 2 games. On the year, they rank 46th in Division 4, scoring an average of 26.9 points per game over the course of the season. Their defense hasn't been much better throughout the course of the season, ranking 22nd with an average of 17.3 points allowed per game. In recent weeks, they have improved, giving up an average of 15.29 points over their last 7 games.
For Perry, Sunday is a chance to expand on a 11-game winning streak after their 48-7 win against the Girard Indians brought their record to 11-0. On offense, the Pirates have been one of the best in the state this season, ranking 2nd with 50.4 points per game. Recent weeks haven't been quite as explosive as they've averaged 44 points per game but they remain one of the most explosive offenses statewide. Their defense gives up an average of 18.5 points per game, which ranks 28th in their division - in their last 2 games, they've improved, giving up an average of 7 points.
