Typically, the first round consists largely of vastly superior teams beating up on other teams in their region that just so happened to get in with enough playoff points. This likely will not be one of those matchups as the St. Edward Eagles head into Friday projected to beat the St. Ignatius Wildcats by a score of 24-19. It's do or die for each team as always in the postseason. Regardless of the outcome, each team can take comfort in the fact that they had a successful enough season to get here, but only one team will be satisfied with the result as the other's season will end on a loss. The Eagles rank 4th in the division while the Wildcats rank 5th. It's a chance for the Eagles to get revenge as, in their regular season matchup, the Wildcats won by a score of 21-7. They also played in 2017, a matchup in which the defeated the Eagles by a score of 17-10.

Last week, St. Edward dropped a game 21-7 against the St. Ignatius Wildcats. They'll look to get in the win column this week as they hope to finish out the season on a positive note. The Eagles rank 22nd in Division 1 on offense, scoring an average of 28.5. However, over the last 2 weeks, their average is down to 18 points per game. Nevertheless, the defense could actually be the true strength of the team, which they've shown in their most recent contests. Over the last 5 games, they've allowed only 14.2 points per game. However, success on defense isn't just a recent trend - on the season, their defense ranks 22nd in their division, allowing 16.7 points per game.

St. Ignatius will look to continue the momentum of their 8-game winning streak, the most recent addition to which was a 21-7 win against the St. Edward Eagles last week, bringing their record to 8-2. The Wildcats offense will look to continue to improve as they've scored an average of 34 points per game over their last 5 games, up from their season average of 26.4, which ranks 30th in Division 1. While the defense hasn't been much better, they have improved lately - while they average 10.9 points allowed per game, which ranks 5th in their division, they've taken that average down to 7.5 points over the last 8 weeks.

Prediction: St. Edward to win (76.20% chance of victory)
